Split, Hvar, Korcula Dubrovnik How much time at each?

Hi there.

We are travelling down the coast of Croatia for a week over July but a little stuck over how much time to spend in each place. At the moment the itinerary is

7th - Arrive from Rijeka to Split at 6:30 am -make our way to Trogir for the day (overnight in Split or Trogir if it is feasible to get back to Split in time for an early ferry to Hvar)

8-11th Hvar (time to look around and spend some time in the sun)

11th ferry to korcula - this is where I get stuck can we just spend a day there and then late afternoon ferry/ bus to dubrovnik or do we spend a night? If we steal a night from Hvar or Dubrovnik - which one?

11 - 14 Dubrovnik (late night ferry out of dubrovnik to Bari on the 14th)

We are a couple in late 20%26#39;s - plenty of energy - we would rather get out and explore than laze on the beach and my partner is very interested in classical atefacts so we have to exlore all the ruins. Where is the best places for this?

OK I think thats all the questions for now! Thanks in advance for any input!

As an option now wondering if one day is enough in Split and Trogir. We arrive at 6:30 am and I think there is a ferry to Hvar at 5pm? Is his enough time to explore? Enough time to get out to Trogir and back?

i have just done a reverse of your trip and this is what i reccommend.

you would be best to stay overnight in split. you can do a trip to trogir on the bus and back ( 1 hour each way) in half a day and spend about 1.5 hours in trogir. spend the evening exploring split old town and diocletians palace.

A day in korcula is plenty to see the old town and beach but you will have to check the ferry timetables to see if you can get from korcula to dubrovnik on the same day. buy yourself a lonley planet guide book or similar as they have lots of useful info though not always up to date.

We are headed to Croatia in September and are struggling with the Korcula to Dubrovnik part. How did you work it out?

Also, did you stay in Split or Trogir, I have been drown towards Trogir, but we want to take the ferry from Split to Hvar, then hopefully a ferry to Korcula then Dubrovnik. I have read that there is a bus from Korcula, but haven%26#39;t found any details on it.

Would so much appreciate any help! Thanks!

Well, maybe I am biased being an expat living in Split, but Dubrovnik isnt worth more than day. Our website, www.sightseeingcroatia.com describes why. Just a museum town, incredibly packed, incredibly hot, best seen at night...and while it is wonderfully preserved, it lacks the vitality and intimacy of Split and so many other places where there is incredible medeival, Rennaisance and Roman art, buildings, etc.

Hvar is very pricey and more than 2 days here when there are better beaches on Brac (Bol) and such quiet beauty on Solta, why blow it all on Hvar?

So I;d spend 3 days in Split--the Palace, swim at Bacvice and Bene, take the water taxi TO Trogir in 45 minutes, just 20kn...and come back in the evening. After exploring some of the great museums here--Split City Museum , Mestrovic Gallery, etc. walk up Martjan hill where the Jewish Cemetery is and then if you;ve got the legs, up to the highest point in Split for some amazing views. Lots of stuff going on at night to keep you busy and most of it free or cheap. Third morning? Take the #60 bus to Omis for a rafting trip, fish picnic or hike. Lots of adventure tours out of this pretty town.

OK, now you can go to Dubrovnik for the day...and to get out of the heat, Korcula or faster, the water taxi from the harbor to Cavtat.

OK, that%26#39;s my contrarian take!

OK sightseeingcr I%26#39;m almost sold on extra time in Split. BTW this original post was posted last May and I think those people were there last July but I appreciated your post as we are taking an escorted tour of Slovenia and Croatia in October and have one day in Split and 3 in Dubrovnik. We will have 12 days after the tour to go wherever we want and Split definitely seems worth more tnan 1 day. If we choose to stay 5 to 7 days what is our best option for lodging? Apartment, Hotel etc. We would want to be near public transportation for days that we don%26#39;t rent a car. Any suggestions are appreciated. Our free days are Nov.1 to Nov.11. We fly out of Zagreb to US on Nov.12. Thanks

Thank you so much for the information.

I have not found the water taxi from Korcula to Cavat? If you could provide information I would very much appreciate it.

We have convinced ourselves to keep our rental car and take it from Split to either Korcula or Hvar (Sucuraj to mainland)then ferry(on Korcula just the short one to Orebic) back to the mainland and then drive to Dubrovnik. I just don%26#39;t want the long bus ride to Dubrovnik from Korcula, and the ferry doesn%26#39;t go the the day that we want to arrive in Dubrovnik, September 24th.

I just have to disagree with the post saying that Dubrovnik is worth just one day. That would only be the case if you are arriving on a cruise ship! Dubrovnik has so much charm, something that Split lacks. One day in Dubrovnik would be a travesty to the place.

totally agree barryM .....dubothernik has a lot going for it and Split to me is a days transit and a look.

With due diligence a very good holiday can be had by doing a trogir....(Split for a day)..Hvar.....Korcula.....Dubrov.

we look thru a different set of rose coloured glasses as an expatriate because inveriably its a life choice not a frenetic holiday choice.

i visit Italy for reasons that are apart than holiday choice and they perhaps would not suit the short sharp holiday experience.

Well, we are ex pats living in Split and have traveled Croatia extensively and all of the Croatians I talk to are amazed that Dubrovnik gets so many tourists. Unlike Split, Porec, Zadar, Pula and many other cities with great architectural treasures, Dubrovnik is not a living city, it is a museum piece. Beautiful, intriguing, yes, but it lacks life and that%26#39;s why you can experience it in a day, maybe two. The same way you see any museum. It%26#39;s not just rose colored glasses....it%26#39;s why you visit a country. To see, to experience, to understand, to feel. To me, Dubrovnik is more seeing than feeling and understanding; that%26#39;s all. Until 1300 Split was the Palace. And since then, you can %26quot;see%26quot; and %26quot;feel%26quot; and %26quot;understand%26quot; all of the centuries as well as the present day--not just be surrounded by shops and restaurants like Dubrovnik. And 30 minutes away from Split is another UNESCO site, Trogir....and of course Salona, the Roman capital of Dalmatia. OK, I rest my case!

Holidaying is on amphets......living is smell the roses. What i am trying to impart as a 3 time expat is that the holiday people are looking generally at the quick fixes.

i live in a vibrant ,beachy area....but you wont find me where the tourists are ....yet they are coming for the reasons i eschew......
