Traveling from Venice to Dubrovnik

My wife and I are looking for a practical way to travel from Venice to Dubrovnik (or Dubrovnik to Venice, if that makes more sense) next summer.

The best flights out of Venice stop at Vienna, which seems a bit out of the way.

I%26#39;ve checked for a ferry / flight combination, such as taking a ferry to Rovinj and flying from Pula (as suggested in some earlier posts), but the flights out of Pula all seem to stop over at Zagreb and are more expensive than just flying from Venice (via Vienna).

Any suggestions?

We will be flying into Venice and would either to fly (or ferry / fly) to Dubrovnik and drive north through Croatia or, alternatively, take a ferry to Rovinj, drive south and then fly from Dubrovnik back to Venice.

Thanks in advance.

Some budget airlines such as easyJet fly direct from Milan to Dubrovnik in the summer (at least they did in 2009). I don%26#39;t think the easyJet summer 2010 easyJet schedule is posted yet, but if you can wait to make reservations, training from Venice to Milan might be an option. They also fly between Milan and Split if that helps your return.

You can check the Trenitalia website to see whether it%26#39;s worth the hassle to train out to Malpensa airport from Venice vs. just flying via Vienna - but it may be a lot cheaper. I like the train myself and prefer direct flights but perhaps this option would be easier if you flew directly into our out of Milan instead of Venice. Or perhaps you could work Milan into your plans somehow.

From Venice, you can take the train to Trieste and then the bus during the night for Zadar o Split. I suggest you to stay and visit both of them. After you can take the bus connection for Dubrovnik. There are no direct connections.
