English will be very common in places which are frequented a lot by tourists. So your restaurants, shops, etc. will have english speakers. I don%26#39;t know the language very well at all and have not had a problem communicating throughout Croatia. I think you will be just fine!

Zadar is very nice, and although I wasn%26#39;t alone I felt it was a very safe place. Eg everyone leaves bags etc around at the beach, in general it is a very relaxed place. English is spoken at all of the places that are frequented by tourists, restaurants, ferry, etc. Tourist maps are available and it is a good idea to indicate where you need to go on a map if using bus or taxi.
