What SHOULD I be paying for a soba near Pile Gate in Oct?

I%26#39;m traveling alone to Dubrovnik in early October. Looking at sobe on a couple of different websites, from dubrovnikapartmentsource.com to hostel booking sites (which also have private rooms).

dubrovnikapartmentsource.com seems a bit pricey for what I want: just a basic room with a double bed, nothing fancy, probably in Pile. I found a place really close to the Pile Gate that%26#39;s about $80/night. Some reviewers (while they like the place) say it%26#39;s a bit overpriced for what it is.

So what should I be expecting? I don%26#39;t want to walk 20 minutes into the Old Town, so I don%26#39;t want to be located far out either.

If by $80/night, you are quoting in US Dollars, then this seems reasonable for a room (about 55 EUR). Things are expensive now for us Americans: the dollar has gotten weaker, the Euro has not gotten stronger, so Euro prices are not coming down to make up for the bad rate. I imagine that it may be possible to find something slightly cheaper, but I haven%26#39;t seen private rooms in or near the Old Town for less than 40 - 50 Euro per night. There is a hostel in the Old Town that charges 25 Euro per night, but that is for a shared room with shared bathroom.

Sorry, yes: $80 USD. I really don%26#39;t mind paying that if that%26#39;s the going rate, I%26#39;m not shopping for a cheaper place, because the location seems good - I just want make sure I%26#39;m paying the going rate. I think the reviewers said the place was worth it if you got a view room but not so much (in their view) if you didn%26#39;t get a view room. I%26#39;m not sure if I care about the view, only about paying a fair price. Sometimes you don%26#39;t know where reviewers are coming from - they could be totally off base.

I think 80 dollars is a fair price if the room is clean and is near the Old Town. Dubrovnik is prety expensive for everything and I don%26#39;t think you are being ripped off.

Andrew, you should be paying exactly what you can afford for a room. Dubrovnik has many very inexpensive rooms to let, although some of them may not be up to your standards. And we also have rooms at the Excelsior which start at $400 at night. The entire world seems to want to find a very cheap room, but clean and comfortable. Well, in reality often the two don%26#39;t work out. Just picking a place to sleep and shower from the internet is not the best choice. Using a reputable booking company, one which will allow you to use a credit card as deposit makes for better accommodations. Also one must take into consideration that often many of the owners websites have been up for several years, and not updated. Once they get a site up and running, the majority of owners will never update their photos. In the long run you must understand that you get what you pay for.

€55 sounds reasonable. We got a place just two minutes from Pile Gate with a view of the walls for €40 just last weekend, but the bathroom could really have done with a good scrub. Most of the sobe people at the bus station were offering rooms at €50-60 for a central/Old Town location. If you want to wait till you get there the prices may fall a little more in the coming weeks.

I just came back last week and I stayed at Apartment Mira

home page: www.dubrovnik-online.com/apartment_mira/

E-mail: apartmentmira@gmail.com

Highly recommend and much cheaper than what you are looking at.

It%26#39;s also right in the old city - perfect location.

Good luck.

Thanks for the apartment tip. What did you pay for the place during your stay? I found another site for the apartment here:

http://www.apartmentmira.com/apartment.html

which quotes a price of 50 Eur/night for October which is about $74/night almost what I am paying. But that site may be out of date - it stipulates a 10% deposit for reservation whereas the site you pointed me to says 30%?
