Hi, i am just now starting my research into going to Croatia. It sounds like a wonderful place.
My first, and basic question is...How to get to there?
Coming from the US, i don%26#39;t believe there are any direct flights to Zagreb?? Is it likely to connect thru Munich, Paris, London??
Last, after reading all the great posts...Where would you recommend a %26#39;first timer%26#39; to go in Croatia??
I love beach, mediterranean living/lifestyle and culture...but hate %26#39;touristy areas%26#39;??
Cheers

We have always flown from Mpls. and have always had to fly into a place such as London, Amsterdam or Munich before catching a flight to Zagreb. Pretty sure you will need to do the same.
Its hard for me to tell you not to go to Dubrovnik. It might be a bit touristy, but it, to me, is what Croatia is all about. Especially for a first time visitor.

Perhaps you should begin doing research by visiting the Croatian National tourist bureau website. You can then decide what part of the country you might want to visit and what time of year to make your trip. Even though the country is small there are so many sights to see which one should not miss, it%26#39;s a very good idea to make more than one trip here.
If you are traveling here during high season, be prepared to visit %26quot;touristy%26quot; areas. Seems that the cruise lines have discovered a place which I%26#39;ve been visiiting since 1971.
From your area you must fly into London, Frankfurt or Paris or Amsterdam to reach Zagreb. No there are no non stop or even direct flights to Zagreb from the states.

You could as mentioned fly via London. easyJet, a budget airline, flies from London (probably Gatwick airport) to Split and Dubrovnik; British Air has competing flights that may not be much more expensive, since they don%26#39;t have the same fee structure as easyJet.
If you time it right and are able to fly into Gatwick (LGW), you might be able to do a same day connection at LGW to another flight and go directly to Croatia; I did it that way a few years ago to go to Prague and it worked out fine, but my flights were all on time. You do run the risk that your incoming flight is delayed...
I%26#39;m flying to Europe next week from the states, eventually to Croatia. I%26#39;m flying to Milan and spending a few days in Italy before making my way to Zagreb via Ljubljana, Slovenia (a charming, beautiful city I%26#39;m told). If you add Venice to the front of your itinerary (as I am) you can train/bus to Ljubljana via Trieste, Italy and then train to Zagreb (about two hours). I%26#39;m flying back from Dubrovnik to Paris via Croatia Airlines, staying a few days there, then flying back to the states.

Have a look at my two Croatia reports with photographs on the links below, may give you some ideas. Happy planning!
