5 night trip in croatia itinerary - please help!

We are planning a short trip to Croatia - flying from Vienna - here%26#39;s what we are thinking:

Fly into Split

1 night in Split

2 nights in Hvar

2 nights in Dubrovnik

Fly out of Dubrovnik, back to Vienna

Any suggestions on the itinerary? We plan to do day trips from Dubrovnik to Mljet Islands? Should we do Korcula too - or will we be packing in too much?

Can you please recommend what is the best way to travel internally?

Should we rent a car, or is it too much of a hassle - we can use bus/ferries too.

I think you are tight for time as it is and if you do one day trip from Dubrovnik don%26#39;t do another one. Mljet is quite a distance as is Korcula. I would enjoy the city and the places local to it - the Elaphiti islands are much closer.

Remember that the transfer time between Hvar and Dubrovnik is a minimum 6 hours, so that either takes time out of Hvar or Dubrovnik.

The fastest travel from Split to Hvar is the catamaran service.

The ferries from Stari Grad on Hvar to Dubrovnik only run twice weekly - you need to know if they go on the day you plan to travel. Check out www.jadrolinija.hr for timetables.

If they do not go on the planned day of travel, then catamaran to Split and bus from Split to Dubrovnik is your next best option.

Personally, I would go straight to Hvar and do 2 days there, allow 1 day for travel from Hvar to Dubrovnik and do 2 days in Dubrovnik.

Great advice from Mutiny. Skip Split and get to Hvar as quickly as possible and then spend two nights there before moving on to Dubrovnik. Also-- no day trips should be considered in that little time in Dubrovnik. Enjoy Dubrovnik and then get to other places on your next trip!

Thats great advice! I think we%26#39;ll plan to get Hvar asap and enjoy Hvar instead of spending time in Split.

Also, does it help to rent a car - I read that getting to Dubrovnik from Hvar is quicker by car? Or should we stick to the bus/ferry option?

A rental car is a personal choice.

Parking in Hvar and Dubrovnik is challenging but not impossible - you need to check if your accommodation has parking space.

Once you get to Dubrovnik, a car is pretty much useless as it is a walking city.

On Hvar, a car can be helpful to see other parts of the island but useless in Hvar town.

Car ferries are much more expensive than passenger ferries. You also need to arrive early, up to one hour in advance of the sailing, to ensure you get on the ferry that you have planned for.

But you have the flexibility to do what you want and stop along the way.

I have booked a car for our trip to Croatia in September, but then I have a 2 year old (therefore extra luggage) and am driving from Budapest. It makes sense for me but you need to work out what makes sense for you.

Lapad Bay

Does anyone recommend staying in a rental overlooking Lapad Bay? I will have a car, and stay for a week. View looks lovely. We%26#39;ll hike, sightsee %26amp; visit Dubrovnick. Is Lapad Bay a pretty place? Is it too far to get to Dubrovnick? Recommend any other places, right outside of Dubrovnick?

Its not that far to the Old Town of Dubrovnik. Just jump on the bus and get there. If you do get a car make sure that there is parking available where you are staying because parking is very difficult in Dubrovnik. What place have you been looking at?

I%26#39;ve read other blogs that say Lapad Bay has too many big hotels, and they do not recommend staying there, actually, that there are nicer areas a bit outside of Dubrovnik. BarryM do you have any other thoughts, suggestions on other places to stay?

I have stayed in the Lapad area and its ok. To me the best place to stay in Dubrovnik would be in the Ploce area, with a great view of the Old Town. But parking could be difficult there.

There is beautiful place to stay in Lapad Bay,it is called Villa Miomir.Easy to reach with a car and a bus station to old town is a few minuts.

I agree with Barry as I have also stayed in Lapad. Essentially, the bay is quite nice but not brilliant and surrounded by chain hotels. There are some OK to good restaurants in the area. But by comparison to being close to the Old Town, Lapad is a poor cousin.

Hi I will be spending four days in a hostel in Old Town, but then would like to spend three days relaxing in a nice hotel somewhere with a nice sandy beach and also a pool. But also somewhere with some nice restaurants and bars! Can you please recommend somewere/ anyone been to any of the hotels?

It is not too far to walk from Lapad bay to the Old City but be aware of the heat. You can catch a bus but they are packed.

I would not call Lapad Bay pretty but it is ok. The beaches are shingle and if you are reasonable swimmers you may find swimming off the rocks better.

If you are keen on hiking than Mount Srd is a must. It is behind Dubrovnik and gives good views over the city, the Islands and Lapad.

The problem with a car is that you may use it too much and it may be better to use the various boat trips.

For sightseeing I would say Korcula is a must. Park the car in Orebic %26amp; get the shuttle taxi over. The drive from Ston up the peninsular to Orebic is stunning, especially the descent into Orebic, but will take some time as the driver will need to park up to admire the view. The drive from Lapad will take ~2.25 hrs so this is a full day. Again consider a boat trip. We stayed in Orebic for a few days and had a day in Korcula.

Yes, it is a fact that many tourists from Italy, Austria and Switzerland come to Croatia to get high quality dental work at much lower prices than in their countries.

It is easy to find the dentists just by googling.

Heard recently that in Slavonia it is even cheaper.

Dental treatment here in Croatia is one of the best and from what I used to pay when I lived in the UK it is half the price !

Great dentists - well worth travelling here for treatment and have a holiday at same time

I actually went to Rijeka, Croatia with my husband. We heard about Dr. Zivkovic, he owns the DentVitalis Clinic there, and after speaking to him and his assistant over the phone and giving the web-site a carefull read, we decided to go and never regreted it. My husband got implants combined with dentures, and I%26#39;m booked for implant surgery next week. Apartment Karmen, Old City Centre Zadar

Hi I would like to recommend an apartment we stayed in, in the old city centre of Zadar next to the Hotel Bastion. It cost 150kn to get to the apartment from the airport. We were met by the owner Karmen and her son and they helped us with our bags and were very welcoming indeed. We are a family of four, two adults a 13yr old and a 4yr old. The apartment consisted of very large double room with a double bed and a single bed. The living area had a fold out sofa bed with our 13yr slept on. It had all kitchen facilities, eating area and a very clean bathroom. It was very adequate to our needs and very reasonably priced I think it worked out about €40/day it was in May but still extremely good value for money. Karmen lives just next door and was very helpful to us. The location is fabulous a stone throw away from everything. Photos can be seen on www.jczadar.googlepages.com. Jean Claude is actually a hiking guide and that is how I came across this apartment via his website, even though we did not book a hiking trip with him, he was more than helpful to us and emailed us regarding our stay and helped us with taxis etc. I have no affiliation to either Karmen or Jean Claudes business but definitley would like to thank them for making our trip to Zadar, Croatia very memorable indeed!

No direct ferry on 21st Sept but there is one that runs between Drvenik on the main land to Sucaraj on Hvar Island. No idea of transport links once at Drvenik and Sucaraj is quite inaccessible on Hvar. You can get the ferry/cat back to Split then get one of the fast buses (bus station right next door to ferry port) down to Dubrovnik (4 hours). I would probably do that.

Agree with Jude C - you are looking at a catamaran from Hvar town to Split and then a bus from Split to Dubrovnik. Allow 6 hours in total as a minimum.

Although you could just show up and buy the tickets before departure, just to be on the safe side, as the no of seats in catamaran and bus is limited, you could buy the tickets for bus ST-DU before heading to Hvar island, and for catamaran the day before(if possible, if they will not be willing to sell the day before, just come early enough before the dept.).

If you could leave Hvar on Tuesday 22.Sept, there is the ferry SG-DU.

There is no direct catamaran between Hvar and Dubrovnik. As Jelsa said, there is a large car/passenger ferry on Sep 22 that departs Stari Grad on Hvar (15 mins by bus from Hvar town) at 9:00am and arrives in Dubrovnik at 4:15pm. It is a very scenic journey and the views from the deck are lovely. You have the freedom to sit, walk around, chat with others or sleep as you go. Simply stock up with some food, drink and some reading material.

Accommodation in Dubrovnik

When I stayed in Split we could just turn up and stay in rooms/apartment blocks that people had converted (as opposed to hotels/hostels)- it was really cheap. Does anyone know if this is the same in Dubrovnik?

You will find that Dubrovnik is the most expensive town on the Dalmatian coast. I personally would not trust anyone who is standing around at the port or bus station with a sign for %26quot;soba%26quot; which means rooms. It is my personal opinion many, not all, but many are not registered with the government to rent rooms. And yes you may save some money, but at what cost? You may want prebook something for Dubrovnik, especially if you%26#39;re arriving during the season.

Your best bet will be to take a bus from Dubrovnik to Split. The ferry doesn%26#39;t run very often and there are no trains between the two. There will be many buses per day going from Dubrovnik to Split and will take four plus hours.

Amaaaazing yacht charter with Lazy Winch!

We went out to Split for a week sailing around the Dalmatian Islands. Our skipper Paul was really helpful and willing to help you extend your knowledge of sailing as far as you wanted. Even though it was our first day he trusted us to take the boat out of the harbour without really knowing our experience.

All the restaurant recommendations were great and the food that we had on board was also really good. The food was some local specialities but also some foods that are more common to others.

The yacht we stayed on %26#39;Teja%26#39; was extremely comfortable, having 4 double cabins each with an en-suite there was always somewhere to go and hide away.

The crew we had onboard for our week were excellent, Hal was an excellent cook and produced it to a high quality and Paul made the whole experience enjoyable letting you do however much sailing you felt like doing. Hal was always happy to help you sort out injuries and getting drinks from the fridge anytime you wanted one. They had excellent local knowledge from all aspects and were keen to do as little motoring as possible which was perfect for us.

The last day was lots of fun even though we had miles to cover we were still able to jump off the boat for a swim. The weather was not always as good as we may have liked but we still pursued our sailing with hardly using the motor. Both Paul and Hal were extremely useful on our last day when we had to get a bus to Dubrovnik, helping with our bags.

Overall it was a great holiday sailing in the sun which all of us enjoyed.

Advise neeed for Zadar in mid Sept

I am thinking of travelling to Zadar in mid September for a week with my husband. We would like to do some hill walking, cycling and also have some beach time. We were not going to hire a car. Can anyone recommend a location where we could stay which would be suitable for all of the above.

Should we split the accommodation/ location into two locations? No sure what the transport system is. Any advise on where we should visit and accommodation would be brilliant.

Stari Grad - Apartment Dora II

Apparently, the Aparment Dora II in Stari Grad does not meet TripAdvisor%26#39;s criteria for listing in the accommodations section, so I decided to post my review here.

Stari Grad — Apartment Dora II — Great location, notable flaws

I spent two nights in the Apartment Dora II in late May. It is in the heart of Stari Grad’s medieval core, only minutes from Tvrdalj, the waterfront, and St. Stephen’s – exactly where I wanted to stay. Up a single flight of stairs from a small gated courtyard, with a roofed patio on the landing outside the door, the apartment had a kitchen/dinette, bath, and bedroom. The rustically decorated apartment had some interesting quirks, like walls that weren’t quite squared off, that I enjoyed for their character. Decidedly less charming were the lack of toilet tissue and bath towels and the need for a thorough cleaning.

Hotels near or at Zagreb airport.

We have an early morning flight out of Zagreb and noticed the first bus from Central doesn%26#39;t leave until 5:30AM arriving at 6AM. Our flight is at 6:50 and that%26#39;s cutting it closer than I like. Any suggestions for lodging near airport would help.

you have few hotels near the airport - Stella Hotel and Porin Hotel the two closest to the airport (3 star hotels, if you just need a place to crash while waiting for an earl flight)

Firstly, just wanted to thank the many here who kicked in and helped me plan my short stay..finally opted for the Pucic since the Wedding venue is there (figured I%26#39;d stay close by and in Town for the 4 days;-) Nonetheless, being guilty of what I usually recc (do some research!), I am curious as to what you think would make for a great souvie of the Country..representative and all! For ex., when in Portugal, hauled a bunch of tiles which made a great framed wall hanging when put together and is my %26#39;Portugal%26#39; treat you can%26#39;t miss when you enter my kitchen;-) Have vases and items from Greece, etc., but would love to purchase 1 nice/traditional %26#39;something%26#39; reflecting the area/trip..what to you think?! Photography around Dubrovnik

Off to Dubrovnik this weekend for a couple of weeks and just wondered if it%26#39;s worth taking a Zoom(long and heavy)lens for wildlife.

wildlife is typical Mediterranean:some birds and rabbits, maybe dolphins in the sea. I saw a fox right on Mt. Srdj overlooking the Old Town this past Spring!

Other than that, hillside is pretty spectacular but you don%26#39;t need a zoom for that...

I always take a telephoto, macro and wide angle to give me more options. There can be lots of bird life behind the university Centre, beyond Sesame, and also on the hill above Gruz. I hate to be unprepared for the ideal shot. If you can easily carry your gear, I%26#39;d encourage you to do so. While in Dubrovnik, try to stop in Da Vino wine bar, and also Nishta vegetarian restaurant - good value, and then in Rosarji, more expensive, but a memorable meal. I could be on a plane tomorrow! Lucky you.

Dubrovnik to Split - Plitvic - Sailing from Split

We are visiting Croatia for 3 weeks in May/June. As we are Aussies and not used to driving on the wrong side of the road (joke!) we though we might fly into Dubrovnik and join an Intrepid travel trip from Dubrovnik to Split (7 days). We would then have about a week in Split to venture out to the country areas, including Plitvic National Park. Hopefully we will be confident enough to drive by then. Any suggestions for other trips either on the way to Plitvic or nearby villages.

We are considering a crewed yacht trip with Lazy Winch from Split to various island for the third week.

If anyone has any suggestions or feedback on any of these ideas, it would be much appreciated.

Hi sounds like a great trip! Only suggestion I would have is not to spend so much time in the split area you would have time to explore either Montenegro or Slovenia lake bled etc. I have some mates who did the Lazy Winch yachting trip round the Islands they had a great time if you contact me I will pas on their email so you can check it out.

I did a Sail Croatia trip in September last year, which was really fun - pretty budget though! Was about 18 others on the boat (all Aussies, South Africans and Kiwis who base themselves in London). Stopped at heaps of islands %26amp; had a good time, nice %26amp; relaxing. From memory it was around $650 AUD for the week (this included most meals). Their website is: www.sail-croatia.com

The economy cruises such as those by Sail Croatia, Bosmere Travel and Seafarers are much different to those offered by Lazy Winch which are more of a personal yacht type trip. At the end of the day it is down to your budget and what you want to get out of it. Check the prices and see what you can afford. Simon from Lazy Winch is a yachtsman whereas the others are for people wanting to visit loads of places as tourists rather than as sailors.

There are several ways to see the islands, but the most common are by ferry, using a budget cruise on a boat that looks like it can sail but usaully charges around under engine, or a slower and more personal trip on a sailing boat, such as Lazy Winch or www.sailcroatia.co.uk, which I found particularlt helpful.

Unless hooked to Plitvice check Krka Falls national park.Similar scenery but much closer. ( less road hassle,more time on the pond).

Besides,you may (almost) go to park entrance saling! (Skradin has yacht marina)

If you have 7 days I would spent it in Trogir - from here you can visit Split, Šibenik, primošten, National park Krka and Plitvice, and even day trips to small nearby islands. It can all be arranged by bus or car, up to 2 hours drive from Trogir, and from my experience, untill now, it works out ant least 5 days to wisit the whole area of central damatia from trogir and a day or 2 on islands

Stari Grad to Split car ferry - turn up early!

Hi,

Just got back from Hvar yesterday (it was lovely!!) and thought we%26#39;d share our ferry experience. Arrived at 10:30 for the 11:30 car ferry to discover it was full, so had to wait until the 2pm ferry.

All the advice I had been given (including emailing Jadrolinja) was to arrive 1 hour early. Luckily our flight from Split was at 7pm so we were OK on the 2pm ferry (it%26#39;s a 2 hour crossing). However, if we had turned up for the 2pm one an hour early there is no way we would have got on it!

By 11am there was a massive queue hoping to be on the 11:30 ferry which just grew and grew all day until the 2pm one went (leaving many behind I%26#39;m sure)

Thank goodness we decided to get the earlier ferry knowing there was another one if we missed it, although I didn%26#39;t really think we would. We spent a hot and boring day hanging around the queue in Stari Grad, watching some poor guy whose job it is to get on his bike and cycle up the hill to check on the length of the queue!

So turn up in plenty of time if you have a flight to catch in Split!!

Yes, you were not lucky, one hour earlier was evidently not enough in the busiest time of the season.Some people use to put the car in the queue the evening before.

Dubrovnik public transport

Sorry struggling to make sense of the Libertas website (maybe %26#39;cos my Croatian is non-existant!!).

We arrive into the main bus station from Split and then need to transfer to our accommodation which is on Brune Brusica. Are there any local buses that head that way?

If not, what would be the walking time?

We want to avoid taxis as I%26#39;ve heard they are very expensive.

Is the address at Brune Busica or Brune Brusica? If its the first one you could get a local bus to the Old Town at Pile Gate and then have to walk the rest of the way. Bad thing about this is that it would be uphill most of the way and if you have lots of luggage it might be quite the workout. If you put Brune Busica into google maps it will show you exactly where it is in relation to Old Town. If you aren%26#39;t up for an uphill walk you might want to just take a taxi.

From the sketchy bus map I found, it looks like buses no.5 %26amp; 8 take road Petra Kresimira on the way to Viktorija and this road runs parellel to Brune Busica. Is that correct? Would this help us avoid some of those steps?

Yes that would save you a bunch of steps. Not sure of where the bus stops are there though. That street does run parallel to yours though and that would indeed save you lots of steps. I looked on the Dubrovnik bus map and it is bus 5 %26amp; 8.

When I stayed at Simply Angelic I had them send a taxi for me. I arranged it through the owner of the apartment. It was the easiest thing. I also don%26#39;t travel light.

The taxi driver is a total character and I was pleased to have met him. He gave me his card which only has a phone number 385 (0) 98 345 121, or 385 (0) 20 417-499. Or his daughter%26#39;s company (which I think can book out the taxi), www.dubrovnik-transferi.com.

The hill is too severe to do with luggage. He can drop you off above the apartment which makes it easier to walk down. I think the bus only stops below the apartment and you%26#39;d have to walk up.

Mostar to Split - inland or coastal road?

I think the coastal road through Metkovic is pretty well defined and well travelled. Has anyone took the inland road whcih go through Imotski? I read somewhere it%26#39;s more scenic, off the beaten track but also winding.

You can make different route for each direction. The delta of river Neretva is a must IMO, because so different from any other area in Croatia.

If you like it scenic in Croatia, do avoid highways.

The only scenic point on the highways in Croatia is the KRKA resting, near Sibenik, when driving to the north only.

The road via Imotski is winding but not that much, it is easy to drive. Imotski town is a great stopover with 2 karst lakes on its outskirts (Red Lake, Blue Lake). The town itself is also nice, all made of stone.

Me and three friends are booked to stay in Nives Apartments. The Address is Nikole bozidarevica, 7, 20000,Dubrovnik. I think it is located in Old Town. Has anyone stayed in these Apartments and if so id appreciate any feedback,, good or bad?

We are arriving at 9pm at night so we would like to have some idea how to get to the apartment. As there are 4 or us would it be cheap to get a taxi direct to the apartment or is it easy enough to get busses etc?

Do not know about apartment but you can get the shuttle bus from the airport and it will drop you off at the old town entrance

Yes it looks like the apartment is right in the Old Town and Korcula gave you good advice about the shuttle. You could always get a taxi and get you to the same place outside the gates though.

Foreign currency will not be accepted, only exceptionally.

I%26#39;d like to take a day trip to Ston %26amp; Korcula similar to the one offered by Atlas tour. It sounds really interesting. I%26#39;m waiting for their reply to see if this tour is running on the 2 days that we%26#39;ll be in Dubrovnik in early September. My guess is their tours are run if there is enough customers. So I%26#39;d like to know if it is possible to do it ourselves by hiring a car.

Of course you can do it on your own! And have even a much better time stopping in Ston Mali, Ston, Trstenik, Kuna, Orebic and Korcula...

We did not stop at Ston but Korcula is really nice.

The drive from Dubrovnik to Orebic will take ~ 2 hours.

The ferry across to Korcula will take ~ 20 mins, plus waiting time, assuming you will leave the car in Orebic.

Other than the drop into Orebic (magnificent views in front of you)the driver will only be able to glance quickly at the scenery unless you pull over. It will be a long day for the driver.

I did that trip with Adriatic Explore (which was slightly cheaper than Atlas at the time). Some others did not like their service but I had no complaints.

If for some reason Atlas or Elite aren%26#39;t offering it, you can check them out too.

It was a very short stop in Ston. Some nice back alleys to wander and very charming quiet spots but not enough time to see much (quick photo of the walls). The urgency was to catch the ferry to Korcula. There was a tour in Korcula and then free time for lunch and wandering which was plenty of time.

Then on the way back we stopped for wine tasting. I think if you want to do wine tasting you should not rent a car. There is zero tolerance for alcohol and driving.

If you can afford a car, go for it. The advice about the driver not seeing much is good advice though because the eyes will have to be on the road. But you will be able to stop whenever, wherever and it would be a great trip driving up the coast, stop in Ston for lunch and then make your way to Korcula.

Unless your standing at the top of Mt Viper in Orebic you can%26#39;t be looking down at the pier. You can walk up to Gospa Angela, the old monastery half way up the mountain. This old Franciscan monastery is more than 500 years old and my mother%26#39;s family is buried in the small graveyard adjacent.

Doing this as a day trip will limit your time in Ston, Orebic and Korcula. Try spending one night down there and really take the time to enjoy the area, especially the wine tasting on Peljesac peninsula.

Based on your suggestions, we have altered our plan to stay one night in Korcula! Please comment on the following itineray:

Leave Dubrovnik around 9:00am

Stop over in Ston for an hour (10:00-11:00)

Drive from Ston to Orebec to take the 12:30 car ferry

Arrive Korcula at 1:00pm

Pick 2 towns to visit on Korcula (are Putnat and Lumbarda good choices?) before checking into our hotel in Korcula Town around 3:30pm.

Spend the balance of the day in Korcula Town.

The next day we%26#39;ll be travelling to Mostar.

Take 10:00am ferry to Orebec

Stop over in Mali Ston for lunk (11:30-12:30)

Arrive Pocitelj around 2:00pm and spend 1.5 hour there

Arrive Mostar around 3:30pm and spend the balance of the day there.

Next morning we%26#39;ll visit Blagaj before start on the road for Trogir.

Great plan. If you are looking for a nice sand beach then Lumbarda would be a nice place to see. To be totally honest though I would say that you should spend the entire day in Korcula Town and just wander around the Old Town. I do like your overall plan though and a great choice to stay in Korcula for a night!

have done a lot of research but am finding things a bit diffucult as far as understanding the transport system HELP PLEASE!

next june we are planning to travel from Venice to Croatia and we are planning to book a 7 day sail trip with Katarina Lines. have enquired about this and the trip goes from saturday to saturday.

1. best way to get from venice to split (public transport-train, ferry bus!)

2. best way to get from split to dublin-any creative ways will be explored!

Your best bet in getting from Porec to Split is by using the bus. It will be quite a long journey, but will be your best option.

Not sure of the flight options to Dublin but maybe if you could take a cheap flight from Split to Zagreb there would be more options to Dublin from there?

I have return flights for 6 nights in Split but looking at spending some of this time in Hvar or Brac, perhaps 3 nights?

Basically we%26#39;re 2 girls who need a break, we%26#39;ll probably stay in a hostel (any recommendations?) we%26#39;re on a bit of a budget!

We just really need a holiday so we%26#39;re looking to walk around a bit, have a few coffees and a nice look at things, perhaps sit on a beach if it%26#39;s warm enough mid sept!

Oct. Nov. in Croatia

We have two weeks to spend exploring Croatia and can rent a car for 2 couples. One guide book suggests that the country closes down for tourism after Oct. 15 and that there is nothing to do or see with many restaurants and hotels closing for winter. Is this true? Is this trip misguided at this time of year?

Would like to fly into Split, explore toward Dubrovnik, work out way back up toward Zagreb, visiting beautiful and interesting and charming places all along the way.....mostly in 2-3 nights per place with occasional one night stops.

Then our friends leave from Zagreb and we plan to spend another week in Slovenia.

Please let me know what your experiences are regarding this time of year and what we can expect in terms of places closing. Do we need specific reservations if we know in advance what will be open?

The tourist season is definitely over at that time and touristy things do close, ferries schedule is slower etc. Still even if you’re not into sunbathing and beaches, Croatia could be interesting. More logic plan would be landing to Dubrovnik (not Split) and travel northward.

By taking the coastal road you will pass small towns like Ston, Makarska, Omiš, also Split, Trogir, Šibenik, Zadar, Plitvice National Park - to Zagreb, plus perhaps Varaždin north of Zagreb.

This is just a general sketch – with no islands includes and no Istria (north Adriatic peninsula with the town of Rovinj and sleepy hilltop inland towns)

Places in Croatia are small and no need to spend more than 2 nights per each.

We are taking an escorted tour of Croatia from Oct.23 to Nov. 1 and then have 12 days on our own to explore the area. more suggestions would be helpful. IE: rent car versus trains, busses. Weather on coast versus inland in early November etc. etc. Have a great trip.

Dubrovnik will begin to close down for the winter months, a few places as early as mid October but mostly about 01 November. It%26#39;s very quiet and locals love the town coming back to us again. There will only be an occasional cruise ship, thank goodness.

Most of the outdoor restaurants will be closed due to the weather.

It would be much smarter to fly into Dubrovnik and work your way back toward Zagreb. Don%26#39;t know if the weather will allow you to visit Plitvice and that would be a shame if you missed this wonder.

I was in Croatia in mid-October last year and traveled from Istria to Dubrovnik. I found there were less public transportation options but other than that all the sights I intended to see were accessible. Lots of restaurants were open in each town I stayed in (Rovinj, Trogir, Dubrovnik) and I had no problem booking my hotels and apartments.

I think its a great time to be in Istria. Truffle season and see if there any any truffle events going on when you are there. I was able to do a truffle hunt which was a lot of fun.

The Slovenian caves were open (but not the cave beneath predjama castle because of bats). So again I think it is a perfectly good time of year to see the country.

Dubrovnik will still feel very open and the season still runs in Split and Trogir albeit at a slower pace (which is rather nice). Places like Krka National Park will be open, but on a shorter day. I imagine the further north, the quieter it will feel, but the Croatian season is now longer than it was 3 years ago.

Hello, I am Sikimilna, I was born in Croatia (Dalmatia) and I can tell you about the beautiful Brac island.

Brac island is 40 minutes from Split (by Ferry and catamaran) and has more than 100 beaches and 22 towns.

I can highly recommend the Milna town, a harbor with crystal and templates water, good for sailing (safe marine), nature, narrow and romantic streets, houses with red roofs and white stones, very safe town and warm people.

Is a great places for vacation and you have many activities for doing during the day. (bikes, motorcycle, boat, excursions, scuba diving, parachute, fishing).

For staying there are houses and apartments for rent.

Is a very beautiful and unknown place, where many famous people come here, to find peace (for example Beyonce, Michael Douglas, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Benneton, Eckerson).

Jude, I woudn%26#39;t say that it will be guieter in the north, on the contrary, north Adriatic has more weekend(+Easter+other national holidays+Christmass) tourists from Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Austria throughout the year.

Relying just on TA posts one could get the impression that some areas are not interesting for visitors at all, because never mentioned here. But there are many of Europeans who visit northern Adria, but they are simply not present here on the forum(language barrier or they know the area very well-no need of posting questions.).

October is perfect and November is good for sightseeing.

There is still the possibility of swimming in Oct in the south, November could be problematic for the weater.

Day Trips from Cavtat

Is it possible to visit places like Montenegro/Sveti Stefan direct from Cavtat or do we have to leave from Dubrovnik? Would this be by boat or bus and how long does it take to travel to Montenegro/Sveti Stefan?

Went to Montenegro from Cavtat about 2 months ago . It%26#39;s a good trip and worth doing . There are 3 or 4 travel agencies in the village , all offering pretty much the same trips . I can%26#39;t remember the name of the company that we used , but it is on the same block as the supermarket near the Post Office . It is an early start / 6 pm finish on the trip and I would recommend that you go to the toilet before you get on the bus as the next chance you get is about 3 hours away .

direct buses from Split to Dubrovnic

I´m planning a trip to Croacia by bus but so far I haven´t found any direct bus linking Split and Dubrovnic. The ones I found make several stops in the way and take quite a long travel time. Someone knows a company that runs direct buses(or even shared mini-buses or vans)? What are the timetables?

There are definitely buses from Split to Dubrovnik, with possibly toilet stops. But at this time of year dont trust a 4hour trip - it will take more like 5-6hours. In this heat it could be nicer taking a ferry? We took a ferry from Dub to Split last Thursday, took 8 hours but we got a cabin in case we wanted to sleep, there was ample decking to sit outside in the beautiful weather, a restaurant and bar, and by far more comfortable than sitting on a bus. Gives you a good look around the islands too!

Let me just say to you considering a bus drive...DO NOT if you like to live. We left today from Split with Promet Makarska d.o.o wich is supposed to be the best busagency. But the bus was PACKED with people standing in the middle of the bus, the bus driver was driving so fast. And getting out of Split and towards Makarska there are some damn steep roads with nothing separating the motorway from the cliff. The bus went in insane speed around the corners, people screamed and some ladies started crying - myself included. It was the worse experience ever, and after two times we tried to ask the busdriver to slow down we gave up. We went of in Makarska and found a private driver... I know it is a bit more expensive BUT I actually have never been so scared in my life. If I can recommend anything it would be to take the ferry or rent a car. MUCH safer..Just wish someone had told me:)

Split airport to port!

Hi, I will be arriving into Split airport from Zagreb on Sunday 28th June at 3.25pm. I was wondering if people think we have a chance of making the 5pm ferry from Split to Hvar? We are hoping to be able to take a bus from the airport to the port, does anyone know the number? or else how much a taxi would cost? And finally does anyone know if there is a later ferry to Hvar than the 5pm one..thanks!!!!

In looking at the Jadrolinija site, the last catamaran leaves Split to Hvar at 3pm on the 28th of June. But there are two options to get to Stari Grad on Hvar on that same day.... one leaves at 5pm, the last at 8:30 pm. So you should be able to make that one for sure!!

Don%26#39;t worry about finding the bus at the ST airport, there is only bus for Trogir, Split I think-someone correct me if I am wrong.

There is a bus in port of Stari Grad waiting at each ferry to take you to Hvar town, taxi is expensive, I never used it.

If you don%26#39;t get the ferry at 5pm, put the luggage in the luggage storage(Garderoba) at the bus station and walk around Diocletian Palace, it will still be daylight( up to 9pm).Everything is in walking distance.

TA member Charlie would probably add: Have a sandwich on the bench in the port and watch the people.

There will be a bus waiting for Croatia Airline flights at Split airport which will take you directly to the ferry port. It costs about 35kn (7 Euro) per person (buy tickets on board). Split can be a very efficient airport and you should make the 5.00 pm ferry. A taxi will cost you about 280kn.

The bus will usually drop you by Diocletian%26#39;s Palace which means you%26#39;ll have a 300 metre walk south away from Diocletians to the main ferry terminal (opposite the railway station - which is also where the left luggage place can be found) Enjoy!

That is the tough one!

You should plan this quite carefully and get yourself an agent for this.

Arrive to Split, take the bus to Zadar and another bus to Novalja on Pag. From there, board the catamaran for Rab... The easiest way is to get a private transfer but expect a 300+ Euros fee or, rent a car for about 50 Euros and drive yourself.

recommendations for 4 nights on Korcula Island

We really would like a place on the beach (don%26#39;t care if it is a pebble beach, as most seem to be) with a terrace/balcony with wonderful views. Probably an apartment, 1 bedroom. Mid-September so need to get it figured out. We will have a car so can drive to smaller quieter areas, but don%26#39;t want to cook all meals, need to be walking distance to good restaurants. There is a regular bus line from Zadar Bus Station (Autobusni kolodvor) to Petrčane, but not from the airport unfortunately. You would have to come to Zadar first and then change the bus, but it shouldn%26#39;t be a problem.

Petrcane is 12 km far from Zadar and there is a local line every 20 minutes to get there. From the airport there is also a bus for Zadar and from there you have to take the bus for Petrcane.

Sofia2 sent me a PM - for the last three weeks I have not been able to send PMs or reply to them so here is her question :-

my husband %26amp; I (early 50%26#39;s) are planning a week in Croatia in june next year. We will be arriving %26amp; departing from Dubrovnik. We were thinking of spending 4/5 nights in Dubrovnik %26amp; doing day trips from there (eg. Mostar, Elaphite islands) then hiring a car, driving to Korcula %26amp; spending 2 or 3 nights there. Is there enough to keep us occupied for 3 nights? We like to keep fairly active. I am not very good at sitting for hours looking at scenery, I would rather be active. Thanks.

There is definitely enough in Korcula to keep you busy for three nights especially if you are hiring a car

There are lots of small villages in Korcula to visit plus you can also take a day trip to Mljet on a boat from Lumbarda (cost is 200 Croatian Kuna for fully day trip)

My wife and I also both in mid-late 50%26#39;s spent a week in Korcula last September and found more than enough to keep up our interest. Lots of lovely walks wonderful architecture, great clear clean water for swimming and snorling. some nice walks along the mainland coast opposite Kurcula with some beautiful churches as well which is only 5 min ferry.

Snorkeling in Krk?

Hello everyone, my girlfriend and me (early 30s, late 20s) are thinking about spending a week in Krk this August.

I was wondering if someone could be so kind to suggest us a good location where to stay, in order to sunbathe and, most importantly, snorkel during the day and enjoy a living but not too crazy/noisy party atmosphere in the night.

So far we%26#39;re undecided between Baska, Krk and Punat - with the latter being the most likely destination, unless adverse suggestions are received. Of course other suggestions are welcome as well.

Hello everyone and Hvala (thank you) all for your suggestions; at the end we opted for Baska and I%26#39;m glad we did; although the village and the beach in town were both a bit too crowded for my personal taste, we%26#39;ve had some good time %26amp; also managed to do some good snorkeling, once we identified the proper places where to go.

To those interested in such activity, I can definitely suggest you to go in the (Ulika) Kricin area, from the beach just after the harbor, until either before or, even better, after the Bunculuka FKK camping site (it%26#39;s a naturist=nudity camping and you%26#39;ll have to pay to get past it, but it%26#39;s not big money and I%26#39;d recommend it). Once you get past it (get proper shoes and water, since you%26#39;ll have to walk on rocks for a couple of hours) you can find beautiful beaches with crystal clear water, which are definitely less crowded than the main beach in Baska and populated by fish. On the other hand, don%26#39;t expect to find anything on the other side of town (Zarok, after the other camping site) since I was reported by some fellow snorkelers I%26#39;ve met there that they spotted nothing there (not hard to believe, considering the amount of people bathing in the whole Baska town area).

Otherwise another snorkeling location I liked is at a beach just before the camping site before the town of Stara Baska (after the town of Punat, at about 30 min away from Baska by car). Before the downhill that takes you to the camping site, just park your car (with the others you see) and climb the hill down to the beaches you see from the street. There are two of them... go for the one on your right, if you%26#39;re interested in seeing sea life, as the other on the left was much less interesting in my opinion; sun also disappears much earlier there, since the rocks on its shoulders hide it very early in the afternoon.

Talking specifically about snorkeling I can say that fish colors are not as vibrant as those of tropical fish but the vegetation was cool and fish was quite abundant nevertheless; in a few words, I don%26#39;t think you can find much better snorkeling places in the adriatic and mediterrean... please let me know if you disagree on this statement of mine, because of course, I%26#39;m curious to receive feedback about cool snorkeling places I don%26#39;t know of :-)

The ferries from DU to Stari Grad run on Sundays and Thursdays only.

You can drive to Drvenik and take the ferry to Sucuraj( only 25 min, very cheap), which is on the opposite side of the island, the first half of the road from Sućuraj is narrow and windy. Some people loved it, some were scared. I like it very much! Just enter the word Sucuraj in the above search box and you will see the older posts about this road.

The other alternative is drive to Split and then ferry to SG(1 hour and 40min , some 400 kuna for all of you and a normal car)

Your quickest route would be to do as advised in the last post, drive to Sucaraj and then ferry over to the mainland at Drvenik. If you don%26#39;t like the sounds of the road to Sucaraj then take the ferry to Split and then take the coastal road down to Dubrovnik. It will be a longer journey though.

I misread your post and thought you were going from

Hvar to Dubrovnik. So everything I said would be just the opposite. You would have to drive to Split and then ferry out to Stari Grad.

The quietest rooms are the ones overlooking the main entrance which is where the ferry stops and the entrance to Wellness Otok, the spa.

The other side of the hotel is overlooking the pool area and bars so would expect a little noise on that side of the hotel, especially as the outdoor entertainment in the summer is in that vicinity.

My partner and I visited the Hotel Istra in June and fell in love with it all . It is such a beautiful location and the hotel was great. As the hotel is built lengthways there are sea views form every side I believe and they are stunning . Where else do you get such wonderfull views without having to pay for a sea view . We would go back there any time and although it was early in the season when we went I don%26#39;t think it should be too bad when it gets busier .Enjoy it . We are envious.

We have now been now and it is lovely though in August very, very busy so not very relaxing. The pool areas were absolutely packed out and the island was heaving with trippers coming in on the boats. We were first given a room on the top floor overlooking scrubland and the tennis court area - so not all rooms have sea views. We had been promised a sea view so moved to a room overlooking Rovinj at the back. Almost all the 3 bedded rooms are at the back of the hotel not the pool side. The third bed is a fold down chair about 2.5 feet wide and rock hard so not good for an adult. The live evening entertainment is also at the back of the hotel at the Captain%26#39;s club though once the windows were closed it could hardly be heard. I hope some people will find this useful.

A taxi from the airport to Lapad should cost 30 - 35 Euro. The bus to Old Town will cost about 5 Euro per person and then a taxi from Old Town to Lapad will be another 8 - 10 Euro. So, for two people, it will be about 20 Euro if you take the bus as opposed to 30 - 35 if you take a taxi directly to the hotel.

Hi, We went to Dubrovnik in April. We stayed in a fantastic apartment owned by a company called Artemida apartments - the apartment we had was apartment bete (one room) - but you can have it with room bete (another room). It was brilliant, because the owner picked up up from the airport and was even able to give us a discount on town wall tickets. It was a 1 minute walk from the main street and all the restaurants. It was also really quiet. The apartments were well equipped (fridge, cookers, tables etc).

Best Location for Accomodation

I%26#39;m going to Zadar for over a week in mid September.

I%26#39;d like to stay in an apartment.

We are 3 men in our late twenties.

What is the best area to stay in? Is the Old town best?

A lot of the apartments advertised are in Borik or Diklo which looks a little far from the center. But these are nerarly half the price of some in the Old town. Borik sounds a bit like a resort too.

We%26#39;d only really use the aprtment for sleeping and would like to be near the nightlife and also near the beach.

What would you recommend?

There is some action in Borik and Diklo as well (some smaller clubs and popular bars) but the Old Town is short ride away.

I would stick with Borik area as very pleasant and the apartments will most likely be better than whatever you find in the Old Town

Hiking

My husband and I will be leaving Dubrovnik on Sunday Sept 6th and have about 5 days to spend in the rest of Croatia. We would like to do some moderate/hard hiking and maybe mountain biking, plus see at least one of the islands. There seems to be a number of national parks between Split and Istria and they all seem to be great. Does anyone have any recommendations to help us narrow down the choices? Thanks!

If I could answer that question accurately, then I would have enough money to buy a villa in Cavtat. Last year, it was cool and wet. Just come and enjoy yourself, it will be a treat at any time of the year.

Dubrovnik is a small town, however asking about a house in a garden is much too broad. There are many houses with gardens, even mine and I don%26#39;t rent my extra room out. If you%26#39;ve a particular house or apartment in mind post the name and address and then someone may be able to answer.

If you%26#39;re staying in Orebić, public transport is rather good, if you want to travel to Dubrovnik and the villages on that route. Orebić is also connected with the island of Korčula by ferry.

Travellerx5, we are travelling to Bol as well but from Hvar.... before that from Dubrovnik to Split by bus. We noticed from help on this forum that its easiest and best to take ferries from Split to Bol, Hvar etc...rather than from Dubrovnik directly.....

As other members have said, there are no ferry connections between Bol and Korcula. In fact, there are no ferry connections between any port on the Island of Brac and the Island of Korcula. No matter how much you search the schedule on www.jadrolinija.hr, there is just no connection.

If you let us know your entry point into Croatia, the time that you have for your holiday, we might be able to help you map out a schedule.

Searching for Comfortable Quiet Aptmt for 2 with sea view

Does anyone have any suggestions please for a nice averaged price apartment with sea view, in or near Dubrovnik for October for retired couple? There are so many available but difficult to choose. We are not sure whether to stay inside the town or out as we like it quiet but convenient for site-seeing restaurants and beach swimming. We don%26#39;t intend to rent a car as there seems to be a lot to see without travelling far so would require collection from airport possibly.

I would suggest not staying right in the Old Town as it might get a bit too noisy there. I would recommend something in the Ploce neighborhood, but the problem with many of these places is climbing many stairs to get to the apartment. The great thing is the view of Old Town and Lokrum though.

Hi We stayed in Dubrovnik in April (my parents and myself). We stayed in the old town and it was really quiet and was very convenient for the restaurants and cafe%26#39;s. It was also close to the marina and just a very short walk from the beach in Dubrovnik. The company we used were called Artemida Apartments. They were very helpful and even picked us up from the aiport. We hired Apartment Bete and Room Bete (two rooms). Both were very well equipped (fridge, cookers, table etc).

Gračišće — Poli Luce — Outstanding hospitality!

I%26#39;m posting this message because the Poli Luce in Gračišće does not meet TripAdvisor%26#39;s criteria for listing under lodging.

I spent one night in a single room at the Poli Luce in early June and cannot say enough in its praise! The room itself was charming, nicely appointed, and furnished in a comfortable, rustic style.

I would have been happy to recommend the Poli Luce under any circumstances, but as it turned out, I have special reasons for my recommendation: Through the intervention of several concerned residents of Gračišće, I learned the morning after my stay that my rental car was leaking gas! Svetlana, who runs the Poli Luce and the town’s restaurant (the Konoba Marino) and who speaks English very well, could not have been more helpful. She placed numerous calls on my behalf to arrange a repair, gave me countless cups of coffee while waiting for news, invited me to join her family for lunch, and allowed me to place two calls to the U.S. in my effort to solve the problem with the car when it looked like the repair might take longer than a day. When the car was finally repaired (thankfully, that day), Svetlana arranged for her husband and daughter to drive me some distance to the service station, where they ensured that the car had been repaired properly, that the paperwork was in order, and that I knew how to get to my next destination. Despite all these efforts on my behalf, Svetlana refused to accept payment for any of these extra services, not even for the international telephone charges!

I cannot begin to say how much I appreciated the generous hospitality that Svetlana and her family provided to me. Gračišće itself is lovely, the Poli Luce is charming, and the Konoba Marino served delicious food. I wholeheartedly recommend them!

bus from cavtat to cilipi

off to cvatat this weekend and fancy seeing the folk dances in Cilipi. Have read about the bus that goes there but infrequently. Does anyone have the times for a sunday or now the bus number please, or is a taxi another option?

Not sure about the bus , but there is usually a taxi or two loitering around the bus area in the village . Shouldn%26#39;t cost a lot as Cilipi is not far away .

There is a tourist bus line which goes from the bus station in Cavtat to Čilipi on Sunday at 09:00, and returns back to Cavtat after the folklore. The price is 20,00 kuna per person - one way.

Has anyone had any experiences with cell phones in Coratia and Slovenia? We are flying into Germany, renting a car and driving down to Slovenia and Croatia. What should we do about a cell phone? Should we purchase one there? Should we purchase it in Germany, Slovenia or Croatia? We are spending equal times in each county.

Unless your US phone won%26#39;t work in Europe (check with the maker) you may be better off buying an international sim card rather than a cell phone itself. Any phone you buy in europe will work in the countries you are visiting but the SIM card is the important element to make sure you won%26#39;t suffer big roaming charges as you move from country to country. Just type in %26#39;international sim card%26#39; into google and check out what comes up. I%26#39;m not familiar with those available in the US but there%26#39;s plenty of competition so you should be ok. Buy an appropriate SIM card and you will save lots of money.

I don%26#39;t think there are any car ferries doing that direct route on a Tuesday.

The alternative is to drive from Korcula town to Vela Luka and get the car ferry to Split and from Split get to Hvar (Stari Grad) or hop over from Domince (just outside Korcula town) to the mainland, then over to Ploce and the onto the east end of Hvar island and drive along Hvar to Hvar town. Use the map section of the jadrolinija timetable to see what I mean.

From Drvenik take the ferry to Sucuraj (east end of the island of Hvar) at 7.30 AM, 9.00 AM, 10.30 AM, 12.00 AM, 1.45 PM, 3.45 PM, 5.45 PM, 7.00 PM.....

Once in Sucuraj you will have to drive 83 km to the town of Hvar, first 50 km of the road are narrow so it will take you approx 1.45 h to arrive to Hvar.

Hi, I have recently returned from a Croatia Sailing trip, which I loved to pieces. While I was in Hvar I came across a really neat Jewellery Shop. I can%26#39;t remember the name but it was quite small in the town centre. They specialised in designs using semi precious stones. Quite different but stylish stuff. Mainly silver with pearls or garnets etc. Hopefully this rings a bell with someone. I am kicking myself for not buying a braclet at the time and would like to get in contact with the shop. best sunset location - dubrovnik

I am into photography and plan on perfecting the best sunset shot while in Dubrovnik. We all know the sun sets in the west. Does anyone know the perfect spot to be standing in Dubrovnik to get a shot with the sun setting (horizon meeting land/water)?

While I have your attention - if you also know good sunset locations for Trogir/Split/Hvar/Korcula......I am eager to listen since I am also going there in Sept!!

You have to drive the old road to Hvar town from anywhere on the Hvar island, and you will have a perfect sunset, even sinking of the sun into the sea from some positions, depending of the time of the year.

Or from southern bays on the Hvar island too.

The Hole in the Wall bar in Dubrovnik is used for sunset drinks - also coming back from boat trips to the Elaphiti islands. In Trogir, froam the top of the Kamerlengo fortress is good or from Saldun beach in Okrug Gornji.

If you want Dubrovnik in the frame go to the Hotel Argentina or go up on the main road to Cavtat a few kilometres away.

Another suggestion is go to Cavtat and you will get some amazing shots. If you have transport try up on the mountain over Cavtat near the The Restaurant Konavoski Komin.

You can forget the city walls for any sunset shots, as they are now closing at 1830. However by next month it will be again earlier as the days grow shorter.

My suggestion would be Buza bar if you%26#39;re on foot. However if you want some really good shots then hire a taxi to take you to the top of Srd, there is no better place for photography of the old town and sunsets.
