My wife and I along with 2 other couples plan on driving from Trieste to Dubrovnik in October. Some questions please: (1) are there any problems at the border, customs, etc going from Italy into Croatia; are the highways down to Dubrovnik in good shape; what are the best places to stop and sightsee, etc., and any recommendations on hotels, B%26amp;B, etc. along the way would be most helpful. Thanks.

Unless you are hauling (motor)bikes or some other high value stuff (movie cameras) the border is a joke.Show the passport,nod,say cheese and after police %26amp; custom nod back - floor it.
(By the way,Italian border is abandoned....dusty tri-color flag is only thing remained.Everything happens at outside Slovenian/EU borders)
To avoid headaches and iffy exchange rates buy some Croatian Kuna right at the border. (kiosk or ATM)
Good shape (partially under revamping) highway starts before Rijeka and ends/splits in Split.Last 88 miles you have to do coastal/scenic road.
Stop %26amp; see (mainly after Zadar) at each greasy dot on the road map.The list is endless.Stop %26amp; sleep at budget %26quot;sobe%26quot; or %26quot;apartments%26quot; sign IF you see the lights.Pancake your expectations as October is a profoundly dead season.If no luck along the road ask at the Tourist office.Hotels cost a bit more but every 12 horse town has one.
PS Whatever they say (in Italy) before entering Slovenia DO NOT blow USD50 for Slovenia mandatory highway toll sticker.Unless completely lost you will not do toll highway anywhere after Trieste.

Many thanks. This is very helpful. What do you know about Trieste? Is it worth spending one to two days?
Thanks.

Trieste is a transit and shopping center, there are some museums,aquarium, you could also visit castle Miramare, there are some beaches around Trieste-but as you will be proceeding to Croatia it has no sense.

Many thanks for all of the information. One more question please: how long does it take to drive from Trieste to Dubrovnik? It seems like a good 8-10 hours. Is this correct? Thanks again.
|||
Close to the speed limit,8-10 with frequent rests but no sightseeing.
For Trieste a half day is more than enough.Try to just run through it and stop if you really feel...enchanted.

I%26#39;m interested in how your drive from Trieste to Dubrovnik was. We%26#39;re planning a similar drive, with plans to stop in Korcula and possibly Pula or Split. Any suggestions? What were the driving times like, and the road conditions? Thanks for any tips.

The ride will probably be close to 10 hours so it would be good to split in two.
Also, Trieste was a discovery to me few years back since it has quite a bit of history (from Roman times to 19th ct.) but there are so many nice places along the route that it would take you a month trying to see them all.
