Pula - worth visiting?

Hi

I am planning to go to pula with my friend for a week - is that too long? The only reason im going is mainly because im booking a last minute deal and other parts of croatia are more expensive!

it looks pretty from the pictures, i am looking for a beach holiday with a bit of culture too, but haven%26#39;t seen or heard anything about the beaches in the area?

Please let me know your thoughts!

alternatively i found a deal for mlini near dubrovnik, is it a very quiet town? I am looking to relax but would like to have option of nightlife. Is it an easy drive to dubrovnik old town? is there much else to see nearby?

Many thanks

Mlini is definitely close enough to Dubrovnik to enjoy it and yet far enough away to get more peace and quiet. I think this would be a great choice and maybe you could even venture to Montenegro on a day trip or enjoy the Elaphite islands which are very near to Dubrovnik. In terms of Pula, I would like to go there just to see the Roman amphitheatre located there. But if I had to pick between the two I would pick Mlini, just because of its proximity to Dubrovnik. Do understand though that Dubrovnik is a very expensive place when you go there.

I agree with Barry; go for Dubrovnik....

4 years and 3000+ posts.... finally DE Dubrovnik

Just as an after thought, Pula is a lovely little stay, great Roman ruins! A week could be too long or you can take advantage of using it as a base to see all of Istria. The busses were great and there are lots of ferries to the other coastal towns, and you can sail to the Brijuni islands. I rented a scooter and had a blast scooting around and going to nearby beaches at Verudella. My favorite was Stoja, and they have campgrounds.(My scooter came from Interway Rentals, 250 kunas a day was pretty expensive but the going rate on the islands too). The beach in Medulin was good for families but i found it boring. My stay at Most Hostel, made my stay. Gordana made fresh banana bread and really looked after everything well and was genuinely pleased to host rather than a lot of grumps I met in hostels along the way. Don%26#39;t miss the pedestrian street under the old Roman gate. We watched local kids from the music school put on a rock concert last night that was too much fun! I%26#39;d use Pula again for sure as a layover, fights from the airport were more reasonable than Split and Dubrovnik.

More congratulations Barry. Perhaps you should be made an Honorary citizen of Dubrovnik!

Both of your alternatives would make a good choice.

Mlini is a tiny village but pretty and close enough to both Dubrovnik and Cavtat.

Pula is very much a working city/port but the amphitheatre is spectacular.

It%26#39;s quite possible to see most of what you might want to see there in less than a day.

Pula however offers a decent bus system which gives you the opertunity at minimal cost to explore the surrounding area.

Rovinj is a must see destination.

Porec, possibly Trieste over the border in Italy and even Venice by hydrofoil.

Beaches are not Croatia%26#39;s strong point as there is very little sand anywhere.

The sea however is fantastic and because of the lack of sand very clear.

Plastic sandals are recommended for entering the sea both for the pebbles/rocks and sea urchins.
