I am planning a two week vacation in Croatia at the end of May, beginning of June. Will be traveling with 2 kids - 5 and 1. Ideally, I%26#39;d like to rent a villa on one of the islands and then take day trips. What would be a good island to make a base? Hvar, Korcula?
If not an island -- are there any other places that we can stay as a base? We%26#39;d love to see as many places as we can without having to change hotel rooms every 2-3 nights. We%26#39;ll be in Croatia for about 10 days, not including travel time. I am just in the beginning stages of the planning, so would appreciate any suggestions.

I think Hvar would be better than Korcula in terms of taking trips from there. Another thought would be Trogir on the mainland. You could get out to the islands of Brac and Hvar from there, could get to Krka Falls, Zadar, Split and maybe others.

Is it drivable from there (Trogir) to Dubrovnik? Also, how is the weather at the end of May -- are we going to be able to go to the beach or is it still too cold?

The water temperature will be a little fresh so it might be a good idea to find somewhere with a pool. Not as common as you might think for villas in Croatia but an increasing number of getting them installed. There are good family resorts in eg Biograd and Borik, both near Zadar, so it might be a good idea to find an apartment near the main hotels there so you can use the family facilities.
If you want to stay on an island, I%26#39;d suggest Supetar on Brac or Stari Grad on Hvar. Supetar is a lively tourist town and you can enjoy island life without paying the earth (eg in Hvar Town) whilst being able to walk to the ferry to go to Split (and from Split to eg Vis and Brac). Stari Grad is also a lovely town (though quite quiet in terms of family facilities) but the ferry terminal is quite a way from the town. Otherwise, maybe Bol on Brac which has the famous Zlatni rat beach.
I think you%26#39;ve got more scope from Brac and Hvar though a day trip from Split to Dubrovnik is quite a long one. Trogir also not a bad idea but it%26#39;s not as family friendly as other places and you will have to get a bus to Split to catch the ferry.

Agree, plenty of day trips from Hvar, although maybe not as many as high season but you can plan accordingly.
Otherwise, Trogir which still gives you easy access to Split and the islands or Dubrovnik which will give you different island options.
Bear in mind that the sea will still be quite cold and there maybe some rain, so consider what there is to do on days when the weather isn%26#39;t so great.
