Hi there,
Not long back from a fabulous 2 weeks in Cavtat - it was everything that was expected + more !!
We stayed at the Zrno apartment at the top of the hill up from the Hotel Cavtat - anyone else stayed here over the years ??
It was a really spacious apartment and we were well looked after by the family who live on the ground floor. Superb views over the harbour and the most spectacular sunsets we have experienced in all our years abroad.
Cavtat is such a relaxing little place with any number of beaches to while away the days - you could find yourself totally alone with a small beach to yourself if you looked in the right places. There are a number of walks around the headlands which we and a lot of other people regularly took - good exercise to counteract the delicious food that we ate.
Speaking of food - it wasn%26#39;t that cheap to eat and drink in the restuarants, and also, as we were self catering, this proved the equal of what we would pay back home. Saying that, most of our trips over the past few years have been just as expensive, so no real criticisms.
We still did have to watch the pennies as we were on a limited budget, so had to make sure that we ate well within this budget. Recommend the Toranj restaurant, as this served lamb and veal %26#39;under the bell%26#39;, In fact this was the only restaurant we found in Cavtat that served this typically Croatian dish. It was so good, we went back 3 times !!
We also ate at the Dalmajia one night and wish we had ate there before the visit - good quality fare, and certainly as classy as the Toranj. For our economy nights we ate at the Posieden, with great views from the ground level over the harbour. The food was really good here, and we dined here for lunch and dinner a number of times. On our first night, we were stuck, as the choice was so good, and ended up at Ivan restaurant - little bit pricey for what we had - sea bass with dalmation vegetables, and the portion could have been better - still, the meals others were having looked OK, so perhaps we chose the wrong meal !
We drank wine with all our meals, and have to say that we never had a bad one - all good quality local Croatian wine, and all reasonably priced at around £10 per litre.
We ventured to Dubrovnik a number of times on the local bus, which is good value @ £1.25 single fare, and returned by water bus, which cost £6. Dubrovnik is a must - great atmosphere both by day and night, and too many restaurants to choose from ! We ate at a vegetarian restaurant we knew about called Nishta, and have to say that food was extremely good and no more expensive than anywhere else - do try to visit this place - we are not veggies, but love veggie alternatives. We did have another couple of meals in the old town, but nothing to write home about - suffice to say that things here were a little more expensive than in Cavtat.
The old town is atmospheric to walk around and the walls are a steal at £6 per ticket - the views from here are well worth the money - tip - the fountain by the Pile gate is the place to fill your water bottles ! We did this on our trips to the town, and saved a few bob doing so ! The tap water, so we were told is safe to drink, but we stuck to the fountain water.
Our holiday was to totally unwind and chill out, but there are various trips that you can take from Cavtat and Dubrovnik. Do try the sea kyaking which is steal for £30 in Dubrovnik - outside the Pile Gate, where the buses unload, there are steps down to the old harbour, which should be signposted for the sea kyaking. You get 3 hours from 9.30am, and the trip takes you around the island of Lokrum and back over the busy shipping channel to a cave, where you have 40 mins free time to swim, snorkel, sunbathe and have a sandwich, before returning back to the start - really great experience !!
We had a couple of days of inclement weather during the 2 weeks, and funnily enough these occurred on both the Saturday%26#39;s ! Overall, we had stunning weather, and this contributed to the chill factor.
Totally recommend Cavtat - the nightlife is fairly sedate - no boom boom music, but a number of good bars with sensible music playing in the background.
