My wife and I love to travel by train and ferry and even bus. We have already booked a two week tour in Croatia and Slovenia, but have 3 or 4 free days. Can anyone recommend a fun side trip on those free days using rail or ferry etc from Bled,Dubrovnik,Split or Plitvece? We also would like to take a train into Austria ,or Hungary or Germany. Any thoughts on how to do that and from where.

Zagreb or Ljubljana, if they%26#39;re not on your schedule. They are the capitals of Croatia and Slovenia, respectively. Ljubljana isn%26#39;t far from Bled and Zagreb isn%26#39;t so distant from Plitvice.
Also, as far as I know, Dubrovnik doesn%26#39;t have a rail service, and I%26#39;m not 100% sure about Plitvice either. If you have any questions about train timetables, check out

About Austria, there are various trains leaving from pretty much the whole Slovenia and Zagreb, depending on where you want to go.
To Hungary, there are trains from Zagreb (and maybe Rijeka or Split in the summer period) and I suppose that there must be some trains from Slovenia. Also, there must be trains from the part of Croatia bordering with Hungary (the so-called Podravina).
For Germany, some trains which go into Austria continue into Germany (mostly, if not exclusively, into Munich), but it%26#39;s quite a long ride, considering you have to cross Austria to get to Germany.

Thanks so much for info on train travel to Austria, etc from Croatia and Slovenia. Do you or anybody else have an idea for a quick ,interesting day trip( scenic or historic etc) by rail or ferry from Dubrovnik,Bled, or Plitvice? Thank you very much.

As I said, from Bled I recommend Ljubljana if it%26#39;s not on your schedule, from Plitvice you can go to Zagreb for a day. From Dubrovnik I highly recommend Montenegro, however, it%26#39;s not by rail or ferry, but by bus. You can book a one day excursion at multiple travel agencies in Dubrovnik and I can guarantee you%26#39;ll have a great time - I was on that excursion (admittedly, 4 years ago) and I really had a blast!

There is the island of Mjlet off the coast of Dubrovnik, a national park with outdoor sports--swimming, kayaking, biking and hiking. Split has many ferries to the outlying islands, too.
Lubjlana is close to Bled, and is supposed to be wonderful; there may be some sort of rail from there.

Yes do not miss Montenegro ....some tours are by car as well.
Have sent a message with some links to my trips that will help decision making.
