2 weeks in Dalmatian Coast June/July 2010

Hi all

I%26#39;ve been wanting to travel to Croatia for a while now and I have just booked flights into Split and out of Dubrovnik for June-July next year. I%26#39;m starting to look at possible itineraries but I could do with some guidance!

We will have 15 nights in total and we%26#39;d like a mix of sight-seeing and relaxing. At the moment, we%26#39;re considering Split - Brac - Hvar - Korcula - Dubrovnik but there are a few things which are making me quite indecisive:

a) whether to stay in Split or Trogir and for how long - we arrive at 5pm on a Saturday

b) how much time to spend on each of the islands

c) how long to spend in Dubrovnik

d) we don%26#39;t plan to hire a car so we need to be able to get everywhere we want by public transport

e) Makarska Riviera - should this feature in our plans?

Any thoughts/recommendations extremely welcome!

Many thanks in advance

We did a similar trip to Croatia a couple of years ago flying into Split and out of Dubrovnik for a total of 17 nights.

Trogir is a very pretty, albeit small, town and I would strongly recommend staying there rather than Split. Trogir is also closer to the airport. We spent 3 nights there (which gave us a day to visit the Krka falls) but 2 would be equally good.

We did a 7 night cruise visiting the islands which gave us a chance to visit some of the smaller ones like Vis (my favourite). It is a good way to visit the islands although the boats are quite small (about 15 cabins) and the accomodation is pretty basic. It might not be your thing but something to consider.

We spent 6 nights at Dubrovnik and would suggest at least 4. Try and get an apartment in the old town. From here we did day trips to Mjilet and Cavtat. You can also visit Montenegro for the day if you wish.

Whatever you decide you will have a fantastic holiday.

a) whether to stay in Split or Trogir and for how long - we arrive at 5pm on a Saturday

-another vote for Trogir; in front of the airport there is a bus station (N° 37); 5 minutes bus ride

b) how much time to spend on each of the islands

-it depends what kind of vacation do you prefer; if you want to spend the most of your time sunbathing, then leave 2+2 days for Trogir/Dubrovnik

d) we don%26#39;t plan to hire a car so we need to be able to get everywhere we want by public transport

by bus to Split www.ak-split.hr , ferry to the islands www.jadrolinija.hr

e) Makarska Riviera - should this feature in our plans?

yes, if you take a bus Split-Dubrovnik

I would say stay in Trogir over Split and just spend a few hours on a day wandering through Diocletian%26#39;s Palace in Split. I think you should spend at least a couple of nights on each island. I do also like the suggestion of Vis as a place to visit, but at the expense of what other place? I don%26#39;t think you have time to go to Hvar, Brac, Korcula and Vis. Not sure which I would leave off either. I also think that three or four nights in Dubrovnik would be good, with maybe a day trip to Montenegro or Mostar. You can easily get around on public transport. When the time gets closer look at the ferry schedules between islands. Understand that ferries or catamarans between islands might not exist or are only running certain days of the week. The Makarska area is a nice area but going there might make you sacrifice one of the other places you are looking at. Not sure you can fit all of that in on one trip.
