Car hire, Dubrovnik airport

Hi, has anybody any recommendations for car hire companies in the cavtat area? And what should we expect to pay per day for a small car? I have heard there has been a hire car shortage this summer but not going to October so presumably won;t be as much of a problem?

I don%26#39;t think you will have any problem with finding a car in October. We have used Sixt in the past but I am sure there are others that will be just as good, if not better. Maybe someone else will give you some advice or maybe start looking on the computer to see what will work for you.

Yes, there has been a SERIOUS shortage! Sixt is part of Atlas and they have been in financial troubles so their fleet of 1400 cars last year got to 540 cars this summer. They closed the booking for August before July 25...

Forgot to mention that October is different and there should be no problems.

Thanks for the help, we%26#39;ve sorted a car out now. Can I ask what the price of fuel is like there? And is it fairly hassle-free to cross the borders into Bosnia, Montenegro etc? We will both be on UK passports

Hi - I know it%26#39;s too late for you since you%26#39;ve already booked your car, but we rented through a local company called Best Buy Rent. We had no problems and it was cheaper than all the bigger rental companies. However, like I said, we had no problems, so I cannot speak for the customer service if there is an issue.

We were there in August and the price of gas was 7.44 Kunas per liter.

About the %26quot;hassle%26quot; of border crossing...There was a delay of about 20 minutes entering Montenegro in the morning (about 9ish) when we went. We came home around 5pm and waited nearly an hour. We crossed into Bosnia in Metkovic and there was no delay. We also had no delay at Neum. Our passports are from the USA and most of the time they didn%26#39;t even open them up and just waived us through. That being said, we did notice quite a few cars having to stop and open up the trunk.

We booked our car though auto europe but we were caught in a panic when we found out that National Car rental just went out of business. AutoEurope offered us a similar deal through Sixt. But the car we got is a very run down Fiat. We later found out that one of the headlights and one of the break lights didn%26#39;t work. The tires were very worn down and had very bad traction. First gear made terrible noise and had little power overall. We really think a good car is essential for navigating the twisty uphill roads in Croatia and Slovenia. I was really uncomfortable with the car that we got. The most scary drives are the stretch to/from Orebec, up the mountain leaving Trogir to Mostar, climbing up Motovun and Groznjan and the Soca valley roads in Slovenia.

So other than the bad car, how was your trip rh1home?

barrymanilow, we have a great trip. I%26#39;d like to write a trip report when I get settled down and find some time to. And thanks for strongly suggesting Mostar for us. We loved it and Pocitelj too(we thought Bagayj is slightly disappointing though). The people in Mostar are so nice. In general, with a few exceptions, we find people in Dalmatia more aloof and disinterested, but Istrians, Bosnians and Solvenes are all very friendly and welcoming.
