I would think a trip out to the islands would be a good idea. Look into going to Brac, Hvar or Vis. Another day trip you could look into is going to Mostar in Herzegovina. Also up to Krka Falls would be a good trip.

thanks again!
we are not going to vis on our cruise, so good to know that it could be a 1 day trip for us! the other places you mentioned, i will look into. really appreciate your help, orbansky

Vis is pretty far for just one day and you will spend a lot of time at sea on the cruise anyway. I think Krka National Park and Omis for rafting/canyoning - more river based than sea. Obviously Trogir!

We live in Split so our advice is for sure to see the Palace...best very early AM or at night to avoid the heat and the crowds. Group tours are 80-90kn and leave from the Peristil, the central open courtyard.
The Split City Museum is a real gem, on Papaliceva ul. one of the streets inside the Palace walls, so it is easy to find. To swim, Bacvice Beach is a 10 minute walk from the open air green market, a real sand beach and very popular with locals. Or take the #12 bus from the end of the Riva, in front of the Sv. Frane church, the one with the clock in the tower. It runs twice and hour and they have added a 12A that makes it 3 times an hour....to Bene. This is the very tip of land, the western most part of Split. A huge park and forest, the swimmung here is fine, with small cafe%26#39;s, rock outcroppings that have been leveled here and there to allow oyu to put down a blanker...all incredibly well thought out and amazingly never crowded. The bus route out to Bene is like being in another country--gorgeous views, green hills. for 10kn!! It takes about 20 minutes from where you get on at the church and simply get out ast the last stop. And then take it back when you want to go back. The Mestrovic Gallery can also be reached by the same bus; lovely grounds, amazing sculpture by the only artist to have a one man show at the Met during his lifetime. A colleague of Rodin, his oversize marble work is astonishing.
Up from the Sv. Frane church is Marjan Hill...you can take a set aof steep staircases all the way up to a small cafe overloojing the city. Very nice. And behind it is a rare treat--a 15th century Jewish cemetery (ask for the key inside the cafe, they will open the gate). You can wander around here for a while. This pristine, very important piece of real estate was given to the Jewish community in honor of their contributions to the city of Split. The synagogue in the Palace (get a copy of Diocletian%26#39;s Palace Map, available free at www.sightseeingcroatia.com) to see where it is and how to get there.
Four times a day there is a water taxi from the Riva that will take you to Trogir...an interesting bookend to Split. And you can also get a tour for around 100kn to Salona, the Roman capital of Dalmatia and far more important and eariler than Split, which even in 1300 was little morte than the current Palace. Although very little of Salona has been restored, yiou can surely get the feel that this was a majestic place with tens of thousands of residenbts. It%26#39;s still very green and expansive with some wonderful remains. I did a blog about it which you can see at viewfromtheriva.wordpress.con
Taking a trip to Brac or Solta or Hvar is also quite easy to do in a day from Split. Solta is only 45 minutes away. You can take the 9:15AM ferry and then the returning 3:30 catamatan and be back in Split at 4. Wonderful swimming, gorgeous nature.
Split also has some great shopping--the green market is the place to go to get great fruit, veggies, etc.
and the fish market, noisy and wonderful, can%26#39;t be beat. To save money, go just before they close.
Wandering outside the Palace, into Varos, also is intresting...galleries, old churches, life as it is here.
So to summarize: 2 days in town, explore, swim, eat, musuem; l day from 9-5 to check out Trogir or Salona or one of the islands...
Enjoy!

Thank you for the numerous places to visit in Split area. Wonderful ideas. Any recommendations to visit any towns in Bosnia? And, if so, how far of a drive would it be?

Look into going to Mostar in Herzegovina from Split. That would be doable in a day trip.

Omis town and the river Cetina could be an option and the dinner in restaurant-konoba Kremenko, unusual and very nice experience
